• Herons, cranes and other wildlife in a palm-covered area of the Gran Chaco of Paraguay. Untouched natural habitat on traditional indigenous territories is being cut down on a huge scale in Paraguay to make way for commercial agriculture, much of which is foreign-owned. International giants such as Cargill and Monsanto for example have bought hundreds of millions of hectares for intensive GM soya and corn farming, mainly as food for livestock in countries like China.
As indigenous territories have been taken over by soya farmers and cattle ranchers, many indigenous groups have been forced off their land, some on to marginal bits of land on the side of the road, and some have been surrounded by farms and cut off from the rest of the world. The 19 indigenous groups in Paraguay were nomadic hunter, fisher gatherers until recently. They have had their lands taken, the natural environment that they depended on for hunting and fishing has been destroyed, and their ability to move around has been prevented by privately-owned farms that forbid them to pass through.

As indigenous lands have been taken for commercial farming, ecological diversity has been reduced dramatically. The natural enviroment that indigenous people have preserved for centuries is botanically extremely diverse and has many thousands of species of birds, reptiles, insects and mammals.

 • Women and girls of the Sanapaná indigenous community in Laguna Pato, Gran Chaco, Paraguay, walking to their community vegetable garden.

Until recently, the Sanapaná people survived entirely as nomadic hunter, fisher gatherers. But as commercial farming has encroached dramatically on their traditional lands, they are now living in a reduced area of land, very small by Paraguayan farming standards, unable to move as they did between hunting and fishing grounds, and according to seasons for gathering in the forests. They are finding it hard adapting to the changes. While they still survive mainly by hunting and fishing, their diet, nutrition and food security has suffered. They live in very remote areas, and buying food is from travelling salesmen called 'macateros' is difficult because they are so overpriced and their incomes, from occasional labour on nearby farms, are so low.

Church World Service supports the community by teaching them to grow vegetables for themselves and providing the seeds for community vegetable gardens. Despite setbacks from floods and droughts, the projects have been taken up enthusiastically by the indigenous people.
