The local population here is said to be exposed to high levels of metals in the drinking water and rivers because of the nearby Marlin mine...The Marlin mine has open-pit and underground mining operations for gold. The gold is cyanide-leached. The mine is located in the municipalities of Sipacapa and San Miguel Ixtahuacán, San Marcos, Guatemala. The mine is owned by Montana, a subsidiary of Goldcorp, a Canadian company and is heavily criticised.
