A miner is winched by hand down a narrow mine shaft. The winch has no brake or stop bolt and the miner has no helmet. In artisanal gold mining in La Libertad, Chontales, Nicaragua, miners extract ore from open cast and underground mines, and crush and mill the ore to extract the gold with mercury.
