“I am studying, and I want to carry on studying. I still don’t know what I want to do. I want a good job though.
Most people around here make a living fishing. We eat a lot of fish here. And we’ve got our own food - machuca, estofado, casave, marote. Grown ups drink gífiti sometimes. And we have our own culture of stories, customs and dances. The whole country knows punta - that’s our dance.
We live in a community here - the Garifina community. That’s not like living anywhere else. We live as families but also as a community. We’re not on our own.
I understand Garifuna, but don’t speak it much yet.
The Garifuna people have a strong struggle to keep its ancestral land as people want to take it off us.”
