  • The ACT Alliance held many action events to call attention to particular issues on climate. Here, on the main concourse of the UN climate talks COP21 being held in Paris, they are calling delegates to push for a fair and binding agreement that recognises the loss and damage caused by climate change, through extreme weather and droughts.

  • On the eve of the first day of COP20, the UN climate talks in Lima, a Vigil for the Climate was held near the Pentagonito where the UN talks are to be held. Christiana Figueres, the head of the UNFCCC and Manuel Pulgar-Vidal the Peruvian Minister for the Environment and President of the UN meeting, spoke to the crowd and a symbolic lighting of candles began the celebration that marks the end of one year of monthly fasting by religious and environmental groups around the world in the Fast for the Climate.

  • "My name is Bruno Nicostrate, I work for ACT Alliance Europe. Whatís at stake this last day of COP21 is if we will get a very weak agreement or a very moderate agreement. We should get a very ambitious agreement, but this is something we will definitely not get. This is why we have to stay focused after Paris and we still need to keep the pressure on our governments and companies, as well as local authorities so they can make more efforts to take action about climate change. When you reach 1.5 degrees, the impact and consequences of climate in human lives will be so strong that, for instance, the low island countries will disappear and there will be a increase of intensity and frequency of extreme weather events everywhere in the world. If it is two degrees, itís even more catastrophic. So, we should aim for the 1.5 degree target to try to minimize the impacts of climate change. The problem is that if we agree on 1.5 degrees we need to decrease by more than 6% or 8% our global emissions every year, starting from now. This has never happened in history before."

  • In San Pedro Sula, two girls play in a refuge for children that receives repatriated migrant children. Some children find parents or family waiting for them on arrival, others wait for a few days for family to arrive from remote rural areas, others remain in the refuge indefinitely if no family can be found. In this centre ACT Alliance provides migrant children and their families with psychological support services, food to take home as many of them live in extreme poverty in rural areas of the country, bus fares to get home are provided where this is a problem, and the centre has been provided with equipment and furnishings.

  • "My name is Patriciah roy Akullo, I'm the advocacy officer for the ACT Alliance in Uganda. Uganda has positions that we want to be incorporated into the final agreement. Itís important for us to see progress on mitigation, adaptation and the building of resilience, and these all require finance. Our communities are already affected by the impact of climate change, some of our communities are already suffering from extreme hunger because of droughts from climate change, they cannot grow food. Some of our communities are affected by flooding, and they need to build resilience to live in safer conditions. We are hoping for an agreement here that will help protect communities in Uganda from climate change."

  • Bessi, a young woman who makes a living as a tortilla seller, rests in a hammock in Rivera Hernández, a particularly poor area of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. There is no formal employment in the area and many people live in acute poverty. The neighbourhoods on the edges of the river here are not recognised by the municipality and are provision of basic services is unstable, water has been cut off to the thousands of households here for four weeks and electricity is routinely black out. Gangs control the area and violence is endemic, children are recruited to the gangs or killed, girls are often raped. People are deperate to leave the area and many make the perilous journey to the US as illegal migrants or 'mojados'. Thousands of migrants are repatriated to Honduras each month. ACT Alliance members in Honduras provide support services to repatriated child migrants and their families.

We do expect that the final agreement from Paris to be positive, but as many brackets are still in the document, we donít know what actually will come out of COP21. We hope that the developed world will do much better to make the earth a better place to live. We need to make sure that they reduce their carbon emissions."
