  • Maria Jesús Medina Pineda, Ciudad Nueva, Marcala<br />
<br />
My mother died when I was five years old, we were ten brothers and sisters. We grew up, how could I tell you, it was a horrible thing. My father had already left the country because of political problems. Damned political parties. They wanted to kill him. We suffered a lot of hunger. The family disintegrated, some left, some died. I stayed with my older sister, she’s still alive, she’ll be 100 years old in September.<br />
<br />
I haven’t always lived here, I used to live near the Catholic church in Marcala. But because we toast coffee, the smoke polluted the air in the city, so we moved out here. I’m 80 and I work every day. That’s the secret to eternal youth, work hard and be honest, I have no ailments, I’m healthy. I had three children, one is in the United States. The boy manages the coffee factory. We prepare, toast and sell coffee in bags. We have been toasting coffee for 40 years, I was the first to do it. I began playing around with it, with plastic bags, I used to send the children out to the street to sell them, or to the neighbours, at three Colons a pound, at that time we used the Colon (Salvadorean currency), as we are near to the Salvadorean border. It’s an honest business, a healthy business. The father of my children died. I didn’t get married, I just had my children, with a military man, he was already married. I have a grandson who is a pilot and another who is a civil engineer and he’s in the United States, you can’t get work here, only if you are involved in politics you can get a job here.<br />
<br />
I fell madly in love with the military man, I was about 22 years old, I had my kids with him.<br />
<br />
With the business, I began in shocking poverty. We didn’t know what to do then. I worked as a secretary in the Junta Nacional. And I worked in the high command of the Army, from four until nine at night. I earned 225 Lempiras in the Junta, and 150 in the high command. I’d put aside 30 Lempiras for the c

  • "Im Henrik Grape, I'm working for the Church of Sweden and the World Council of Churches Climate Change group. We are here to bring the message from the faith communities that to overcome the climate change itís not enough with politics and technical issues, we also need value-based changes for the transformations that we need. <br />
<br />
The Church of Sweden has its own environmental work in parishes, where targets are set to reduce the environmental footprint of churches, but we have also divested from fossil fuels completely, and this is a very clear signal that you must look where you have your investments, from a moral point of view. The result of our divestment, financially, is that the returns on our portfolio have improved, so people who are skeptical of divestment financially should take note."

  • Father Ismael Moreno SJ, known as Padre Melo, talks about press freedom in Honduras and faith.<br />
<br />
Media in Honduras is intimately linked to the groups who have power. Moreover, power in Honduras is ultimately expressed through the capacity to control the media. The well-established national media in the country is associated with the five powerful groups that exist in the country. Those are Grupo FICOHSA, Grupo Atlántida, Grupo Dinant, Grupo Terra and Grupo Karim’s. These groups bring together the 17 most powerful groups in Honduras, the 17 most powerful surnames in Honduras. <br />
<br />
The media, the TV, radio and printed press, normally follow the script, that they shouldn’t intimidate these groups, and ultimately express the interests of these powerful groups.<br />
<br />
So, the media in Honduras is extremely conditioned by the owners, who are part of these economic groups, and who have more power than any government. They are the real government, and they have the ability to veto any sort of candidature that could affect their interests. These are the five groups that were behind the coup of 2009 and these are the five groups that are behind the re-election of Juan Orlando Hernandez, and these are the five groups that have the power of veto over any candidate that has the shadow of Manuel Zelaya Rosales. Manuel Zelaya Rosales represents a threat to these five powerful groups. <br />
<br />
These five groups are tightly linked to the embassy of the United States of America. For the government of the United States, Honduras has a geopolitical interest, without an interest of what life is like in the country. They are wary of political instability, they prefer alliances with the old politicians, even if they are tainted with corruption and are responsible for human rights abuses. <br />
<br />
The media are property, in these sectors of power. So, for the media that aren’t in the script, that relate with defenders of human rights, that relate with opposition, that are outside of the area of control of

Speaking shortly before the first anniversary of the assassination of her mother, Bertita spoke about the persistent threats against her mother and family, and the pain of losing their mother. She says that the assassination is a political crime, covered up by the state, and is part of a policy that has seen 123 defenders of land and environment assassinated in Honduras since the coup. Bertita is currently one of the leaders of COPINH, that is campaigning against the construction of a dam on sacred Lenca land.

<br />
I’m here because we have a climate emergency, we need to make radical changes to our economy, and to do that we need a political earthquake. To make it happen, we need a non-violent civil uprising. We need to have a zero-carbon economy by 2030 at the latest. This sort of change is unprecedented in human history, so we want the government to declare an emergency, to deal with this as an emergency, not business as usual, Getting arrested, going to prison, that’s something I’m willing to do, it’s not something I want to do, I have other things I'd rather being doing with my life, but I’m willing to do it to make this happen. And there are many of us willing to make sacrifices. For me, I’m trying to follow Jesus, he showed us the redemptive power of suffering love, on the cross and in his passion, that’s the way of the cross, it’s the path I am called to follow in these situations".

  • "My name is Joe Ware, I'm the Church and Campaigns journalist at Christian Aid based in London. Weíre all here to get the world on track to a low-carbon planet, one that will tackle climate change and its effects. Itís not just about bringing down emissions, itís also about dealing with the effects that weíve already created, and helping those communities that are suffering the consequences. After 21 attempts, weíre finally at a big meeting where weíre hopeful we are going to get an actual deal which will put us on that pathway. The most important thing is a political signal to the world that this is the direction we are going in. Itís already happening outside of this conference with investors and businesses and all sorts of exciting developments and weíre here to make sure that the politicians and the governments can actually get it written down on paper and make that signal concrete for the world to see. <br />

Weíre fortunate enough to have some very well qualified policy and advocacy staff working with us, and they engage in the process. We believe in tackling the structural causes of poverty. If we can get a good deal, it will make the lives of poor people better around the world."

I have migrated to the US seven times. The last time was a very bad experience.<br />
<br />
At the beginning it was fun, going through Mexico. But, as soon as I got across the river into the US, it was bad. It is dangerous, you can lose everything including your life.<br />
<br />
My feet were tired, I’d been walking three days and nights, I had injuries on my feet, my socks were stuck to my feet, I couldn’t bear it any more. That night, we were walking through forest, there were thorns, the thorns would get stuck in my skin, scratch and injure me. We could see lights way off in the distance. It was evening time, I saw a woman who’d given birth, both the woman and the baby were dead. I got scared, the guide got hold of me and covered my mouth to stop me screaming. The smuggler wasn’t bad, he left me on a road where I’d get picked up by the migration. <br />
<br />
Migration passed by a few times before picking me up. Eventually they woke me up, I could hardly stand up, they treated my wounds. I asked for political asylum, and I was left in prison for seven months before being deported. My family thought I was dead, there aren’t any international calls. When I got back here, I got off the bus, and my father saw me and he fell down on the ground and couldn’t stop crying. <br />
<br />
The LWF has helped me set up my own salon, they’ve helped me a lot, to buy my equipment, they’ve given me training. Now I have a job, I have no need to leave again.<br />

  • At El Playón, on the edge of Carepa city, the river is changing course and moving closer to the housing every day. Political decisions to sell the river to a commercial sand mining operation have resulted in massive river erosion that is affecting the security of Carepa city dwellers. Every night of rainfall more erosion of the river bank happens and more trees are washed away.
